I found this out when trying to use efu explorer. But independent of that it seems I'm doing something wrong ?

Are any .efu found, anywhere?
ext:efu
If not see if you have not excluded .efu?
Tools | Options | Indexes -> Exclude

The search command ext:efu finds nothing
At Tools | Options | Indexes -> Exclude
There are no files excluded at all
ie There are no efu files excluded.
ie the excluded box is empty,
The "enable exclude list" option was ticked ( with nothing in the exclude box)
So I unticked it and saved options again.
and tried ext:efu, but still get nothing.
Commands ext:pdf or ext:txt return hundreds of files as expected.

Could you have a filter set? Under Search, which entry has the bullet next to it?

Yes Filter was set to documents
I changed to Everything and rerun query ext:efu
and all efu files appeared.....
I'm a new user of less than a week and have not investigated filter usage. Must have changed setting when I was looking around and not realized.
Maybe, the filter in use, could be added to the status line, which I have turned on.

It is, already. Bottom right of the Everything window.
