mounted search problems

I want to report some unusual behavior with Search everything when using imaging software such as Macrium Reflect. With search directory of "Q:\" the search was blank and it stayed like that for a while. It wasn't until I changed the following settings did this improve:

Everything Service = OFF

Run in Background = OFF

Run as administrator = ON

I guess that has nothing do to with the default settings.
Macrium mounts images as drives with enhanced privileges.
Change the setiings back to normal and add the Macrium mounted drive as folder index.

What version of Everything are you using?

Everything version 982 fixes an issue with indexing Macrium mounted volumes.

I am able to index Macrium monuted volumes here running Everything as a standard user and with the Everything Service.

Everything 1.4.1.1017
Windows 10 1903 18362.535
Macrium Reflect 7.2

This test was done on 1.4.1.1015

But changing these settings had this affect. I'm not sure why. I was doing further reading here to try and get a clue Services VS background

I just ran the test again with Version 1.4.1.1017 same thing happens. It's not really a big deal since it's fixed by changing the settings, though I'm not sure why these settings cause this affect.

Everything is most likely not being notified about the newly mounted volume.

Please try leaving the Q: drive in your index:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the NTFS tab on the left.
  • Uncheck Automatically remove offline volumes.
  • Click OK.


Everything might be having trouble saving your database to disk.

Please make sure Everything is installed correctly and running as a standard user:
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the General tab on the left.
  • Check Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything.
  • Uncheck Run as administrator.
  • Check Everything Service. (Please make sure this is tick-checked and not square-checked)
  • Click the Indexes tab on the left.
  • Please make sure database location is blank/empty.
  • Click OK.
  • Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
  • Restart Everything.


If the issue persists, could you please send me some debug output:
  • When you notice the Q: drive is missing from your index
  • Copy and paste the following into the Everything search box:
    /debug_log
  • Press ENTER in the Everything search box.
  • In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
  • Click the NTFS tab on the left.
  • Click Cancel.
  • Exit Everything (File -> Exit)
  • Restart Everything.
  • Could you please send your %TEMP%\Everything Debug Log.txt to support@voidtools.com

Only windows running as an administrator are notified when a new Macrium Reflect volume is mounted.
It is caused by User Interface Privilege Isolation (UIPI) which prevents programs running as a standard user communicating with programs running as an admin.

Everything 1.5 alpha uses a different monitoring technique and should pickup the newly mounted Macrium Reflect without running as an administrator.
