New design for Keyboard tab in Options...

Post by Stamimail »

The old:

The new: (turn it into a table, and allow to edit shortcuts directly in the table)

Notes:
1. The first 3 lines in the tab go into the table, saving valuable space.
2. The big advantages are: Easier and faster learning and editing of shortcuts
3. When conflict happens, a tooltip like this should appear
Image
4. "Search for command:" needs to be able to search by:
  1. The command as written in English (for user wants to copy/paste from forum)
  2. The command as written in the custom language of user
  3. The hotkey ("Ctrl+S" as text will hit on "File | Export...")

I found one disadvantage though:
As you can see in the bottom of "The old" pic, you can assign multiple shortcuts for the same action (Ctrl+W and Esc). (Maybe this is something that can be overcome)

An aside. If the reader wishes to examine all of their keyboard shortcuts, type the search command about:keys and hit Enter. This can be added as a Bookmark for easy access and reference.

I am on the fence about this belonging as a Help -> Keyboard Shortcuts menu.

Nice. I see for the first time "Mouse Shortcuts". I guess creating a tab for Mouse shortcuts customization will be much more complicated task. It will require including the target element and the available actions. A discussion on Mouse, it's for another topic.

IMO

While "spreadsheet" input has its place, don't know about this?

mpv.net uses (can use) a "spreadsheet" for some of its "hotkey" settings.
(Ctrl+I, or, context-menu | Settings -> Show Input Editor)
I rarely use it, instead I'd tend to manually edit its "input.conf" file, as I find the GUI "quirky".

Firefox (browser), about:config, went from (in earlier FF) an actual tool, to an awkward "video game", in current versions - losing functionality in the process & where an errant click can inadvertently change a setting. (Oh, & don't forget the hieroglyphics.)

Now it could be that a change to a spreadsheet could work well here, but why?

I will consider a spreadsheet layout for keyboard shortcut customization.
I have put on my TODO list to search the English command names and keyboard shortcut text.

Thank you for the suggestions.
