Hello,
Ran into this issue many times on 2 machines (XP SP3 x32 and 7 x64)
After installation, program works for some time, but later (probably after restart) I only get a blank file (looks like white paper list) instead of actual Everything shortcut.
Shortcuts get changed both on desktop (if I created shortcut there) and in start menu.
If I try to run this file to launch Everything it doesn't start but instead I get a window asking me to "choose a program to open this file". By the file it lists "Everything".
The only way to open Everything ok is to go to Program Files folder to launch actual .exe file. ALL the shortcuts get replaced by blank files.
As I said it happens many times on different machines. Any way to fix?
Thanks
P.S. What a shame the search program forum doesn't have search option itself. Spent so much time trying to find some answers here.
Blank icon instead of Everything shortcut
Re: Blank icon instead of Everything shortcut
I would start with finding out what is changing your lnk association. Please check for viruses and malware.
For Windows 7, you might like to try restoring your lnk associations:

Look for the lnk link in the url above and download and apply the reg fix.
The forum has a basic search in the top right.
There is also a search in the top right of the main voidtools website: http://www.voidtools.com/.

Re: Blank icon instead of Everything shortcut
Thanks for fast reply,
I tried the link you provided and downloaded and ran the "Default_EXE. reg" file
That didn't help though
As for malware I have antivirus and regular checks performed
I tried to reinstall and realized that correct shortcut in the start menu does not get created right upon the installation. Like, right after I install Everything, I get the blank file
Here's screenshot
http://prnt.sc/eyczi5
It happens on 2 different system, XP and 7, and happens always
Looks like something is not getting done properly on the installation process
And I've seen similar screenshots on the web so it's not only me
Anyone complained here BTW?
P.S. About forum search, right, I guess it appeared after I registered here but not for guest

Re: Blank icon instead of Everything shortcut
Try portable version - and from Tools | Options | General tab, tick the appropriate option - then check if the problem still exists.
Re: Blank icon instead of Everything shortcut
Where is this shortcut located?Everything shortcut
Does Everything create the shortcut or you?
Appears that Everything puts shortcuts either on your desktop & or on the Start Menu.
What is the extension of this "blank" Everything "shortcut" file?choose a program to open this file
Is it still .lnk or is it something else or does it have no extension at all?
(Might have to enable display of extensions in Windows Explorer [or use a file manager that doesn't hide them].)
Right-click | Properties on this "shortcut".
What does it show?
Blank as in zero bytes (& no extension at all)?ALL the shortcuts get replaced by blank files.
Are other program's shortcuts likewise affected?
Are you using your own Everything.ico file?
Re: Blank icon instead of Everything shortcut
Thanks for the screenshot.
This is a known issue with the Russian translation (an invalid character was used in the shortcut name), it should be fixed in Everything 1.4 beta or later.

Re: Blank icon instead of Everything shortcut
Thanks for replies guys!
However, as void mentioned and I suspected, that was a known bug.
I tried new beta and now it creates 2 .exe shortcuts in "programs" list,
one is blank, same to what's on my sreenshot, and is called "Everything",
and right below it one more, called "Everything Search", and that one is ok, not blank.
So, two of them, but looks like at least one works.
BTW any ideas when 1.4 will turn to final from beta? Looks like it's in beta state for some time.

Re: Blank icon instead of Everything shortcut
You will need to manually delete this broken icon.
Please check if the broken icon is created when you change the start menu shortcut from the Everything Options:
