How to search mapped network drives?

First, this program is pretty neat. However, I want to search my network folders that are mapped. I know this has an HTTP and FTP server options but the help is extremely vague on how to set it up. I have 3 computers and one of them is our "server" (WinXP Pro SP2) which has several drives all shared on the other 2 PCs. The other 2 PCs often have "Apache Friends XAMPP" (a friendly version of Apache server) running while we test out websites we are working on in Dreamweaver. I know very little about servers but have managed to setup and use XAMPP with no trouble but there were pretty helpful tutorials for that.

Any tutorials for Everything Search Engine? I just want to search all local and network folders.

You will need to start an ETP or HTTP server on your "server".

To start an ETP server:

• In Everything, On the Tools menu, click Start ETP server.

The ETP/FTP service is started on port 21 by default.
The HTTP service is started on port 80 by default.

If the ETP/FTP or HTTP servers do not start, you may need to change the ETP/FTP and HTTP server port if you already have services running on these.

For example, to change the ETP/FTP server port to 5485:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the ETP/FTP tab.
• Change the ETP/FTP port to 5485
• Click OK.

For example, to change the HTTP server port to 81:

• In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the HTTP tab.
• Change the HTTP port to 81
• Click OK.

To connect to an ETP server:

• In Everything, On the Tools menu, click Connect to ETP Server....
• Type in the ETP server name.
• Type in the ETP server port.
• Type in the ETP server user.
• Type in the ETP server password.
• Click OK.

To connect to a HTTP server:

• In your web browser.
• In the address bar, type in http:// followed by the address of the HTTP server, followed by a colon (:) and the port number.
• For example: http://fileserver:81
• Click OK.

Thanks, but I have a few questions now.

How do I know if the ETP server on the "Server" is running?
On the other computers what do I type in as the Server Name? I tried typing in what I found on http://www.displaymyhostname.com/ as well as "localhost" but no luck.
Do I type in a password and how do I set a password? Is this secure or can others outside of my network search my files?
How do I know if I should use the default port number or a custom one?

I am sure these are NOOB questions but It's new territory for me.

How do I know if the ETP server on the "Server" is running?

To determine if the ETP Server is started:

• In "Everything", under the Tools menu, the Start ETP/FTP Server option will be checked.

If you clicked the Start ETP/FTP Server option, and it is not checked, see your Errorlog.txt file in your "Everything" installation folder for any reported system errors.
It is highly likely there was a bind conflict. (The ETP/FTP port is already in use.)

You can use the computer network name or IP address.

To find the computer network name:

• On the computer whose network name you would like to find, In "Everything", from the Tools menu, Click Connect to ETP server...
• The computer network name is displayed under user.
• Click Cancel.

By default the password is ignored.

To set a ETP/FTP password:

• On the ETP/FTP server computer, In "Everything", from the Tools menu, click Options.
• Click the ETP/FTP Tab.
• Type in a password for the ETP password.
• Click OK.

Is this secure or can others outside of my network search my files?

The password is sent as raw text and could be intercepted (same as FTP).

How do I know if I should use the default port number or a custom one?

If you are already hosting a FTP service you will need to change the port number.

I'd like to set this up as well. The computer I would be searching from is connected to the mapped drive's network. Do you think setting this up would cause me any grief with my IT administrator? What about if I set it up on a computer that would be connecting via VPN?
