Installation
- Download "Licenses.zip", "Everything Themes 1.1.zip" and "EveryTheme 1.1.zip" to your system (resp. : the licenses, the themes and the program).
- Extract the licenses and the themes to new folder
- Extract the program to a folder (can be the theme folder, if you like)
- In the EveryTheme folder is a setting file, EveryTheme.ini. Change the settings to match your situation.
Currently:
- 2018-11-26 11_43_33-C__Develop_EveryTheme_EveryTheme.ini - Notepad++.png (44.53 KiB) Viewed 327981 times
- Start EveryTheme.cmd
- 2018-11-26 11_36_23-C__WINDOWS_system32_cmd.exe.png (24 KiB) Viewed 327981 times
- In the menu that is shown, press "i" (Install)
- That's it.
Importing a theme
- If you already have created special color settings for Everything, export those first (see "Exporting your theme")
- In File Explorer, browse to the folder where you extrascted the .everytheme files.
- Double-click the one of your choice.
Now Everything will exit (if it was running) and start again with the theme of your choice activated.
- That's it.
Hint: Instead of doing this using File Explorer, you can also use Everything itself! Just double-click (or <Enter>) the theme of your choice.
Exporting your theme
If you want to export your current color settings as a .everytheme file, you can do so by:
- Start EveryTheme.cmd
- 2018-11-26 11_36_23-C__WINDOWS_system32_cmd.exe.png (24 KiB) Viewed 327981 times
- Press "E" (Export)
- That's it.
- Well ... almost!
- Don't forget to post your nice color settings here on the forum!!
Some remarks
- Written for and tested on Everything 1.4
- I wrote something to convert Notepad++ color schemes to something that Everything can understand.
Those themes are free to use or change, but most come with a license text that has to be distributed along with the themes. And rightly so, as it is a lot of work to create such a theme. The author deserves credit for that.
You can find the (original Notepad++) license descriptions in the Licenses.zip file.
- If you are running Everything as administrator (Don't! It's the cause of a lot of trouble!), there are special instructions for installation and importing theme files.
If this apply to you and you *have to* run Everything as administrator, I will provide instructions.

In the zip are a new Everytheme.cmd and Everytheme.ini.
Replace the existing ones, change the INI and re-install the shell integration.
Couple of examples for icons to use are in the INI.
For icons in resource files, like
ICON=%SystemRoot%\system32\compstui.dll,-64040
, you will have to look up the resourceID in that DLL/OCX/ ..
You can use a program like IconsExtract (NirSoft). No need to extract the icons; just get their ID. You have to add the "-", like in the example.
Note: You might have to logout (or even reboot?) to bypass the IconCache.

Oops, the limitations of digital communication ...
I never felt insulted or something similar. That doesn't fit my image of you (based on your postings here) AT ALL.
I was just kidding because of the big contrast between your first and second posting. I thought that was funny.
(Note to self: Never try funny on the internet ...)
I could say a lot more about this, but that would probably cause more miscommunication along the way

Exit from Everything (close program)
In Everything.ini find parameter search_edit_font_size and set it to desired value.
Start Everything again.

Here the 'official' Everytheme 1.2. (it has some extra checks built in).
As a bonus: Some icons that can be used. Those are all Everything icons, but in different colours.
Seems fitting for Everything colour theme files...
Those can be found on
this page too, but are included here for the "batteries included experience"
Have fun!

Is there any way to make the theme also apply to the rest of the window? For example the menu bar and so?
To me it looks unnatural if the theme doesn't blend in with the rest of the window and leaves a white patch on top.

Currently, no.
Windows have not provided an API to do this
last time I checked. I'm hoping there will be a future API to enable dark themes for any window.
Alternatively, I would have to completely skin Everything myself, which is on my TODO list.

I think you need something like
WindowBlinds for that. You can do per-application skinning. (just mentioning it; no personal experience ..)

When I click on an everytheme file, I just get a Windows "How do you want to open this file" message, nothing more. Any idea please ? I started the cmd, even as admin, all seems to go as you explained. Except evertheme doesn't seem to be understood by the shell.
It's too bad to have such a highly configurable everything.ini without a UI for dummies (who said like me ?) to change fonts, colors, etc easily

You might be running Everything as an adminisrator. See original remarks:

If you are running Everything as administrator (Don't! It's the cause of a lot of trouble!), there are special instructions for installation and importing theme files.
If this apply to you and you *have to* run Everything as administrator, I will provide instructions.
If you are indeed running Everything as an administrator:
enable
Everything Service and disable
Run as administrator.
Both settings can be found under Menu:Tools > Options > General

Hard to tell if we don't know what you did
Maybe you didn't do anything wrong at all...
When you start EveryTheme.cmd, does it tell you
"Shell integration already installed"?
What happens if you double-click an .everytheme file?
BTW: There is also Everytheme 1.2 with a few improvements (a couple of posts above)

@aviasd:
You can change the font of the search bar too! That can be done by editing Everything.ini:
(Everything can not be running while editing, otherwise your changes will be overwritten when you exit Everything)
- Completely exit Everything by right-clicking the Everything icon in the system tray and choose Exit
- Open Everything.ini in a text editor
- Search for the line with the text search_edit_font_size
- Change that line to (example): search_edit_font_size=14
- Save Everything.ini
- Start Everything
If you want to change the fontsize of the statusbar and the resultlist column headers (Name. Path, ..), you can do that in the same way.
Everything.ini can be found in the folder
%appdata%\Everything or else in Everything's program folder.

Hi,
Got through the first part of installation. Saw this:
download/file.php?id=610
Here is my
EveryTheme.ini file:
Code: Select all
;=== Location of Everything.EXE
; EXE=c:\tools\everything\everything.exe
EXE=C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.exe
;=== Location of Everything.INI
; INI=c:\tools\everything\everything.ini
INI=C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.ini
;=== Where should EXPORTED themes be saved?
EXPORT=C:\Program Files\Everything\store-themes
;=== Icon to use in File Explorer (etc.)
; If not defined: use Everything.exe icon
;
; Some examples:
; ICON=c:\path to\My Favorite.ico
; ICON=%SystemRoot%\system32\compstui.dll,-64040
; ICON=c:\program files\everything\everything.exe
My themes are here:
C:\Program Files\Everything\theme\Everything Themes 1.1
Strangely, every time I try to click on one of the themes, I get a blank command line window opening. Then, Everything closes, re-opens but...no theme is applied.
What do you think is happening?
Got my file structures listed in the attachments as images.
Sincerely,
Captee

On first sight, it looks like Everything is unable to save it's settings to the INI file.
Everything.ini is in C:\Program Files\Everything\ according to tour Everytheme.ini.
"Normal" users don't have write-access in this folder.
To fix this:
- Enable Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything (Menu:Tools > Options > General)
- In you Everytheme.ini, replace the line INI=C:\Program Files\Everything\Everything.ini with:
Code: Select all
INI=%APPDATA%\Everything\Everything.ini
After these modifications, what happens if you double-click one of the .everytheme files?
Note:
If you enable
]Store settings and data in %APPDATA%\Everything, there will still be a (stripped down) Everything,ini in your Program files\Everything folder. This is by design.

Hi,
Hip, hip...HOORAY! Following your simple instructions that worked EXACTLY right.
I was even able to set the search box to a huge size, too. Sooooo...that's a HUGE benefit!
SUPERB! Many thanks!
ANOMALY
Seems like themes Monoindustrial & Bespin use an out of sequence color for alternating rows in the date value?

PREVIEW PANE INVERT COLORS
Is there any way to invert the color in the Preview pane? So that the Preview pane show white text on a black background?
I'm visually impaired so...the white text on black is a bit easier for me.

Not at the moment. It is on the to do list or Everything 1.5.
As it is now, the preview pane is a "shop-in-a-shop":
Everything has "outsourced" the preview functionality to Windows and just reserves some space for this Windows' preview functionality to do it's magic. Unfortunately, that magic doesn't include different color schemes (previews in File Explorer are also only in black on white).
Preview pane coloring would mean that Everything would need to write it's own preview handler.
Good news: that is on the to do list for plain text files (including different colors and fonts).
Note: If you want a larger font in the preview pane: the preview pane uses the font setting of Notepad.
So just increase the default font-size in Notepad.

Hi NotNull,
Just had an idea. Tell me what you think.
Understand that the Preview Window is a "shop-in-a-shop".
If I selected a Word file, the shop that would open would be Word's previwer. PDF, PDF's, and so on.
This suggests that the default, open-from-the-start "shop" is either Notepad, or Windows Explorer, which, as you noted, is always black on white.
My idea was a to add a millisecond's delay in the initial preview by filling the Preview Pane with a color FIRST, then opening whatever "Shop" is requested when one finally finds the file they need to click. So that, no matter what type of document I choose to preview, I need to first clear out a colored screen.
Put another way, rather than opening the app with an ACTIVE (all-white) preview window tied to Notepad or Explorer, let users decide a fill color there as the default state, which then gets wiped out once one clicks on any document type.
Somehow it is the vast, stark contrast between the calm dark styles and that wide plane of a preview window waiting to be filled that could be managed this way.
How does that sound? Sort of...delay the first shop from opening by having that space filled with a color of the users' choice at each newly opened search.
Sincerely,
Captee

I like the idea!
This is what (I think) I know about preview handling:
- Windows has a special program to manage these previews, prevhost.exe. There are a lot of non-standard characteristics to this program as it must always run restricted (security), runs "unmanaged" (the calling program is no longer in control) and a couple of other "stuff"
- Prevhost.exe searches the registry to find out which routine (preview handler) should be used to show the contents of this specific file type (pdf, doc, jpg) and gives control to that preview handler to show it. It also tells that handler where to show it (the reserved screen-space). Sort of a "shop-in-ashop-in-a-shop", now I think of it
(Very short version)
So I think it could be quite complicated - if not impossible - to do it this way.
But I am not a developer (Everything's developer is void, btw), so I might be entirely wrong about all this.

Perhaps Everything launched as an admin?
Please make a backup of your Everything.ini in %APPDATA%\Everything.
Please try running Everything as a standard user:
- In Everything, from the Tools menu, click Options.
- Click the General tab on the left.
- Check Everything service.
- Uncheck Run as administrator.
- Click OK.
- Exit Everything (right click the Everything tray icon and click Exit).
- Restart Everything.

Hi, Mighty V!
Did that. Run as Administrator was already unchecked. Restart - still the same themes erased.
Interestingly, even the
View > Filters was undone. I normally have that on.

Sounds like my Everything.ini got reset somehow? I'm sure I have a backup. If I am able to get to a backup from, lets say last week - well before this issue occurred, would copying that over reset things?

- Change the following lines:
search_edit_font_size=
to:
search_edit_font_size=24
