I am really no expert for preview handlers, but my approach would be to install the free Adobe PDF reader (or similar PDF capable software) and hope that the installer will fix the problem.

Set Run Count ... from the context menu within search results is a very convenient way to teach Everything what I want to priorize. double_click_path setting should also apply to the Run History.
In the search results I find it quite handy to have directly 2 choices: to open the file or to open the path.
Run history results should provide similar comfort (besides the button and the context menu).
