What am I missing?

I really think I’m missing something somewhere but please help with the following question. When I do a search, I very often get results that seem like some sort of system files. I don’t want this to happen. Examples: Search for: Results med lots of files ending in ETI med a bunch of DLL files med w...

excluding (NOT) with the ! symbol

I know I can do something like "tax !lnk" to exclude the ".lnk" files from my search results.

How can I set this as a default condition so I don't have to type it in each time?

Thanks.

Re: Question about clicking within search bar

STOP!! I don't understand this but it is now working. It did do the behavior as described but I typed the previous reply and then realized that the reindexing had probably not had time to finish. Some time as I was typing the previous reply it seems to have started working because when I posted the ...

Re: Question about clicking within search bar

Maybe I goofed but things are now worse. I clicked into the empty search box at the top and entered: /select_search_on_mouse_click=0 Just to be sure, I exited the program and restarted. I then entered "PWH" (no quotes) and get no results at all. I have tons of folders and files that contai...

Question about clicking within search bar

I have already put a search string into the search bar and gotten results. Now I want to change the search a bit by adding another term onto the end. When I click in the search bar, even though I click in the white area to the right of the previous search phrase, it highlights the entire existing ph...

Re: Help with what should be an easy filter

Just an FYI, I also noticed that the LNK files that I wanted to ignore are in the RECENT folder. Since I am letting Everything search everywhere it picks those up. So I may end up going into more detail and setting up a filter to ignore the RECENT folder. Or maybe just stick with !.LNK. Just some ad...

Re: Help with what should be an easy filter

Thanks for the replies. This info will help. I generally do not have really complicated searches so purposely try to avoid too many filters or changes to search defaults. I worry about making things worse for myself! I do think that "!.lnk" will be the way to go for me to go. I also think ...

Re: Help with what should be an easy filter

So why do I always find what appears to be the answer *after* I post then go searching again??? Doing the search and adding "!LNK" at the end seems to work. (Without the quote marks) Is this the best way? I want to be sure I don't somehow miss any results but initial testing seems to indic...

Help with what should be an easy filter

This should be an easy filter but I can't figure it out so help would be appreciated. In some of my searches I get filenames with ".LNK" added to the end of file names. These are shortcuts that are being created after I have opened (in this case) a spreadsheet. As I step through spreadshee...

Re: Common search stops working - reinstall fixes

OK, I see your point and agree. I am still leaning away from the INI being the problem though. If a bad INI was the problem then, if they aren't replaced, the problem would persist after the reinstall. Since a basic reinstall solved the problem then I am leaning back to the indexing concept. Plus, s...

Re: Common search stops working - reinstall fixes

Recall that I have recently done a reinstall so install defaults are in place. Under Indexes=>NTFS for each disk, do you have Include in database, Enable USN Journal & Monitor Changes checked? Yes for both drives. Again, I assume this is the default after an install since I did not make any chan...

Re: Common search stops working - reinstall fixes

So, just to get back to a known starting point I uninstalled Everything and reinstalled using setup version "Everything-1.4.1.877.x64-Setup.exe". I checked and the default for "Match Case" seems to be unchecked, or at least that is how it was just after the reinstall. I searched ...

Re: Common search stops working - reinstall fixes

OK, when I use Everything I do not make changes from one time to the next on things like "Match Case". In fact I rarely do more than start Everything and enter a word or two that I know is part of my file or folder name. If things like Match Case are changed from one use to the next it is ...

Re: Common search stops working - reinstall fixes

My version is: Version 1.4.1.877 (x64) I was unaware of the steps you gave. I will keep them in mind for the next time this happens. Things are working OK at the moment so I can't anticipate when the problem might happen again. Thanks for the suggestion and I will try those steps the next time the p...

Common search stops working - reinstall fixes

For personal & project sorting reasons I have -lots- of files and folders that start with the three letters PWH. I usually search by just typing in "PWH" and then going through the results to get to the file or folder I want. Several times in the last few months typing in "PWH&quo...
